The tourism industry is undergoing a fundamental shift. As global travellers seek more meaningful, seamless, and responsible experiences, countries are modernising their tourism ecosystems. In Spain, this transformation has taken a significant leap with the launch of the Smart Destination Platform (Plataforma Inteligente de Destinos, PID)—a pioneering digital infrastructure empowering destinations, businesses, and travellers alike.

Backed by Historic Investment and a National Strategy

Announced by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, the PID is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR). Developed by SEGITTUR, the platform is now fully operational and serves as the technological backbone for Spain’s Smart Destination Network (Red DTI). It reflects an unprecedented public investment in tourism: over €3.4 billion, with €95 million specifically allocated to support 46 destinations integrating the PID.

What the PID Offers: Tech for Everyone

The PID delivers a suite of shared digital services for:

  • Destination managers, to optimise tourism flows and sustainability practices.

  • Tourism SMEs, to access data insights and personalise visitor experiences.

  • Public-private stakeholders, to foster collaboration and innovation.

  • Visitors and residents, to enjoy more seamless, enriched, and responsible travel.

Its structured and phased rollout will match each destination’s digital maturity, ensuring that all regions—regardless of size or resources—can benefit from this transformative tool.

Complementary Programs for Broader Impact

Alongside the PID, other national initiatives are reinforcing Spain’s commitment to innovation:

  • Última Milla: €87 million invested in 346 digitalisation projects involving 477 companies—97% of which are SMEs.

  • Experiencias Turismo España: Focused on experiential tourism, this programme has funded 71 projects placing people and storytelling at the heart of travel.

These efforts reflect a wider redefinition of tourism—from product-focused to experience-driven, from mass-market to high-value, and from fragmented operations to integrated systems.

Looking Ahead: Spain Tourism Strategy 2030

The launch of the PID is aligned with the forthcoming Spain Tourism Strategy 2030, built on the principles of triple sustainability: economic, environmental, and social. As Rosario Sánchez emphasised, the aim is to ensure tourism remains a force for quality employment, inclusive growth, and community well-being.
