Sustainable Tourism Development: Innovating for data-driven policies and decision-making

Transformative action is needed set tourism on a path for a stronger, greener and more sustainable future. To support Spain’s Recovery and Resilience Plan sets out an ambitious agenda to modernise and make the sector more sustainable, the OECD, with the support of the EU Technical Support Instrument, is working with four Spanish regions – Andalusia, Catalonia, Navarra and the Region of Valencia – to develop a common set of indicators to measure and monitor the sustainability of tourism.

This session will provide an overview and update on the work carried out by the Spanish regions, as well as discussing with other European regions on the challenges and opportunities of developing and implementing sustainable tourism indicator frameworks. The session will also inform the next steps in the project, as the four Spanish regions prepare to pilot the draft indicators.

09:15 – 10:30 High Level Panel Discussion: Challenges in developing and implementing sustainable tourism indicator frameworks

Each of the four regions participating in the project will be responding to the moderator’s questions that address the objectives of the project, how other regions can join, and lessons learnt in the process. In addition, other countries will discuss challenges and opportunities that have emerged, and how implementing this and other frameworks can inform policy and decision makers in their regions.
